Why join this session?
How do international students feel? How can we make their experiences in Melbourne more accessible and better understood? How can we inspire empathetic responses and break through the myths and stereotypes which frequently surround reports and representations about students from overseas? How can we create spaces for students to feel welcome, and that they belong here in Melbourne and are not just fulfilling an economic imperative for universities and governments?
A recent collaboration between the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, local creative practitioners and former international students has resulted in an exciting, long-term exhibition installation which explores the real, lived experiences of Melbourne’s international students. Drawing on the ground-breaking theatre work of Catherine Simmonds and captured by filmmaker Irene Metter, with the support of Study Melbourne, RMIT and the City of Melbourne, this new installation aims to respond to all these questions in a museum ever-evolving as a site of empathy, authentic storytelling and contemporary social issues. This session will bring together a panel of the project’s museum staff, creative practitioners and participating former students to reflect on the development of this project, its aspirations and challenges, and the impact on the students themselves.
